Monday - Friday; 7 hours/day - 12 month position Salary Schedule is based on the 2023-2024 school year and would start as soon as conditional offer process completed.
New hires typically begin at Step 1 on the Salary Schedule.
Relevant certifications/education may be consideration for Step increases.

TITLE: Mechanic SUPERVISOR: Transportation Supervisor JOB TYPE: This is a Classified Position, .
875 FTE (7 hours per day); typical work hours 9:30am-5pm, includes a 30-minute lunch break (hours may be modified to support the department) SUMMARY: The Mechanic will assist in providing safe and reliable transportation for the Siuslaw School District and will do so under the guidelines and regulations as set forth by the Oregon Department of Education, Pupil Transportation Division.
The Mechanic performs major and minor mechanical work including repair, minor body work and general maintenance of school buses, ground equipment, Type 10 vehicles, and other equipment for the district.
The Mechanic will work under the direction of the Transportation Supervisor.
Mechanics exercise judgement and discretion as it relates to decisions of repair or replacement of components and on general vehicle safety.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
Ability to meet the physical and mental standards necessary to perform the duties, and responsibilities of a school bus driver as required by the State and District policies and procedures.
Possess a valid Oregon Commercial Drivers’ License, Type B, with passenger, air brake and school bus endorsements, demonstrating a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of all applicable laws and regulations.
Possess an Oregon School Bus Drivers’ Certificate and maintain a driving record within ODE requirements.
Valid Oregon Driver’s License CPR/First Aid Certification Must obtain an Oregon Department of Education Annual Inspector Certification within 1 year of date of hire.
Must have experience with gas and diesel motors and truck or bus repair.
Experience with Blue Bird buses with GM, Ford and Cummins engines, preferred.
Must be familiar with and capable of using a computer for accessing information and/or Ability to work with minimal supervision in performance of duties.
Willingness to attend workshops and training sessions.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written communication.
Ability to work and communicate with students, parents and school personnel.
Ability to work harmoniously with others.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Performs complex work in the repair and maintenance of school buses and other automotive equipment including Type 10 vehicles.
Assists in accurately tracking bus and district vehicle mileage.
Assists in reviews of driver log books/inspection reports daily.
Assists in the inspection and/or repair of unsatisfactory vehicle conditions.
Determines extent and type of repair needed.
Estimates cost of repairs.
Assists in the installation of brakes and related repairs as assigned.
Performs vehicle preventive maintenance.
Performs vehicle lubrication, oil and oil filter changes.
Maintains shop tools and equipment.
Ensures and maintains shop in a safe and orderly condition.
Maintains records of repair and maintenance work.
Responds to emergency breakdowns and repair vehicles at emergency site.
Operates a variety of vehicle maintenance and repair tools and equipment in a safe manner.
Upon certification, performs annual inspections of buses and repairs according to manufactures specifications.
Drives school bus as assigned which may include daily driving assignments based on department needs.
Fueling and washing of buses.
Attend annual training and educational classes as required.
Other related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: This work is done indoors, outdoors, on a school bus or in a school or district environment, and may include cleaning agents and gasoline smells, human bodily fluid cleanup and repetitive work.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 and below 32 degrees and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces.
The employee must be able to meet the deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with the public and other workers.
The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of others.
The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.
May work with high stress student, family, or personnel situations.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 60lbs and occasionally up to 100 lbs.
The employee is regularly required to operate heavy shop equipment.
The position involves sitting, standing and walking.
The employees will frequently bend or twist at the neck or trunk while performing the duties of this job.
The employee frequently repeats the same hand, arm or finger motion many times.
The employee frequently uses hand strength to grasp tools.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and peripheral vision.
Mechanic, while driving a bus may be required to demonstrate ability to: open and close a manually operated bus entrance and exit control with a force of at least 30 pounds.
Climb and descend steps with a maximum step height of 17 ½ inches.
Operate two hand controls simultaneously and quickly.
Have a reaction time of ¾ of a second or less from the throttle to brake control.
Carry of drag a 125 person 30 feet in 30 seconds or less.
Depress a brake pedal with the foot to a pressure of at least 90 lbs.
Depress a clutch pedal with the foot to a pressure of at least 40 lbs.
unless operating an automatic transmission.
Exit an emergency door opening 24 x 48 inches at least 42 inches from the ground in 10 seconds or less.
Visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye either with or without corrective lenses and a binocular acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye either with or without corrective lenses.
Perceives a forced whispered voice in the better ear not less than five feet with or without the use of hearing aid, or if tested by the use of an audiometric device.
No hearing loss in the better ear greater than 40 decibels at 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz and 2,000 Hz with or without hearing aid when the audiometric device is calibrated to American National Standard Z25.

Drivers requiring a hearing aid shall wear a properly operating hearing aid at all times while driving and supervising students.
In addition to the listed physical requirements, the Mechanic must meet physical examination requirements at outlines in the current Oregon Pupil Transportation Manual.
Requires the use of computers and office equipment.
CONDITIONS: This is a 12-month classified position.
SALARY: Will be determined by terms of the current negotiated agreement.
The amount due under the contract will be pro-rated monthly in accordance with district policy.
