Job Description As an Entry Level Utility Locator for Hunter Communications, you’ll be responsible for locating and marking our underground utility infrastructure and communicating with excavators and other utilities about the status of locate tickets.
Your job duties will have you working in the field in the Eugene, Oregon area, with travel to other Hunter service areas and overnight stays as needed.
This is a full-time, hourly position with overtime as necessary to meet project deadlines and on-call work as required to respond to emergency locate requests.
This role offers the opportunity for cross-training and further advancement into the Hunter Communications Engineering department.
Job Duties Your duties as an Entry Level Utility Locator will involve a variety of responsibilities and tasks, but the essential functions of your role will require: Locating Hunter-owned underground facilities using radio detection transmitters and receivers, probes, maps, and other tools and resources; marking Hunter-owned underground facilities using marking paint, flags, and other tools.
Communicating verbally and in writing with other utility operators, excavators, and the public; taking other actions as needed to protect facilities from damage.
Documenting utility location activities; taking photographs of marks and documenting details such as approximate footages of locates performed.
Communicating with members of the public to gain access to utility easements, successfully addressing the concerns of people who may be hesitant or resistant.
Observing and inspecting Hunter-owned facilities and taking immediate corrective action and/or reporting the need for corrective action to appropriate staff.
Assisting engineering and other departments in performing utility pole and telecommunications facilities inspections using a variety of tools and techniques such as visual observation, measuring sticks and tapes, digital cameras, and electronic surveying equipment.
Accurately entering gathered data into predefined forms using digital devices and/or handwritten notes, reporting observations in a clear and concise manner.

Basic knowledge of Oregon utility locating and excavating laws, administrative resolutions, and best practices as published in the Oregon 811 Utility Notification Center Standards Manual and in Hunter Communications policies and procedures.
Ability to verbally communicate with a high degree of professionalism, tact, and sensitivity to concerns raised by property owners and members of the public.
Basic knowledge of NESC code requirements and utility pole owner requirements within the assigned area of operation.
Basic working knowledge of and the ability to effectively operate and troubleshoot Windows-based computers and Android or iOS based mobile devices, including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Earth and other Google Suite tools.
Valid driver’s license and ability to pass MVR check - this position is subject to a pre-employment drug screen and random testing.
Able to safely operate a company-owned and/or personal motor vehicle in accordance with Hunter Communications policy, local, state, and federal laws.
Adherence to Hunter Communications safety policies and procedures and industry best practices.
