*Please read the whole listing before messaging - we will not respond to your inquiry if you have not filled out the application questions.
* Hello!! Thanks for your interest in the Peacock Farm :) We currently have one room available in our main house.
We are seeking someone who is interested in living communally, has experience with relating to land/gardening, and is passionate about working towards racial, social, and environmental justice.
WHAT IS THE PEACOCK FARM?! The land we call the Peacock Farm is 40 acres of beauty! It includes a trail that leads directly to Wild Iris Ridge Park.
We have a wild food forest-permaculture garden that has lots of medicinal plants, shrubs and baby trees, as well as a large garden where we grow lots of food and herbs.
In the past, we’ve taken the form of intentional community with many shared ideals and projects, but now we’re more of a shared housing situation.
We still meet occasionally to check-in with each other and discuss items relevant to living together.
Projects that have been worked on include tending a permaculture food forest, oak savanna restoration, native meadow restoration, gathering and preserving wild-crafted and gleaned food, and infrastructure projects.
We are a 15 minute drive from downtown.
In the past, people have bicycled to town, however, the challenging driveway and busy/steep road make it hard to live here without a vehicle.
Twelve people currently live on the land, scattered across two main houses and five independent structures.
Our current constellation of humans includes a few queers, a combination of people of color and white people, mostly in our 20s and 30s plus a few elders, and one child who lives here part time.
There are a handful of folks who live on the land and abstain from decision-making processes, and we adore them too! We seek to create spaces that are liberatory for all beings, and work to deconstruct the harmful structures of oppression that proliferate our world and have left their residue of conditioning in us.
We expect the white folks on the land to do the inner and outer work to deepen their embodied understanding of racism and white supremacy—how it functions in the world, how to work toward dismantling it, and how harm can be caused when the way it has been programmed into us isn't addressed and uprooted.
We are seeking landmates who are in the active process of learning and growing through intersectional frameworks that make space for the wide range of identities and experiences of others.
YOUR POTENTIAL LIVING SITUATION: There are currently three people living in the house and one room open.
The current occupants are a 29 year old white nonbinary person who works in HIV prevention, a 23 year old indigenous trans woman who works in indigenous land stewardship, and a 32 year old African American woman who works in gardening.
There is also one rescue dog who lives here.
The place is not wheelchair accessible.
The shared indoor shower is on the small side, but we do have a gorgeous outdoor shower hugged by a maple tree that better accommodates all bodies.
There are proliferant allergens due to the dusty nature of old houses as well as from the dander of our furry friend, but we do our best to keep up with the cleaning and use air purifiers.
Most of the landmates share the single washer and dryer that live in this house.
The open room ($310) is a large 16’ x 11’ ground floor room with beautiful, wood paneled walls.
Comes with a small closet, dresser, desk and baseboard heater.
Good light from south facing windows.
The downside is that this room shares thin walls with common spaces, so a lot of sound from people going up and down the stairs, as well as the laundry machines, and voices from people hanging out in the kitchen and living room carries pretty clearly.
This is a beautiful and spacious room but would not be a good fit for someone with sound sensitivity.
YOU: Queer and/or BIPOC applicants prioritized.
Comfortable living with people who are sober and people who are not sober, and have an intentional relationship with your use of substances if you are not sober.
Covid conscious and actively taking steps to reduce risk of covid exposure in your life.
Enjoys keeping communal spaces tidy and can commit to participating in a weekly chore wheel.
Taking an active role in unlearning and dismantling white supremacy, colonization, transphobia and other axes of systematic oppression, and are taking demonstrable actions towards this work.
No pets, OR only pets that are hypoallergenic (due to severe allergies).
THE FINE PRINT… Yesssss, the land is gorgeous and wonderful in so many ways! And—it's not without its challenges :-) We live in the country.
Internet can be slow or nonexistent.
Storms can fell trees.
It's not the most average set up, and there is some labor involved in keeping the place running.
We want living here to feel fair and sustainable so care and reciprocity flow freely, and so labor doesn’t fall on any single individual’s shoulders.
We share this not to scare you away, but to be realistic and upfront about the full range of what living here entails.
The landlord lives here part time so you may see him about the property from time to time.
Rent: $310 per month Deposit: $300 Pet deposit: $100* Pet rent: $15 per month* * Please note: we are not able to accept any more pets that are not hypoallergenic due to severe allergies.
APPLICATION: We would love to learn about you! ::If you are interested in the room, please answer the questions below:: If writing is not your jam, and you would prefer to make a video or send audio recordings of your answers… we would absolutely welcome that, too! Please submit your response including 4 references we can contact, and your phone number so we can get back to you easily.
