*SUMMARY OF POSITION* Our Garden Program supports around 200 Latinx and immigrant households in growing their own organic produce in seven community gardens located across Lane County.
We are seeking a dedicated, and fully bilingual, Organic Education & Production Coordinator to support the production and distribution of culturally relevant crops, in a collaborative, "learn-by-doing" process with program members.
Additionally, this position will promote and offer educational opportunities for program members, general community members, and beginning and transitioning farmers in the state of Oregon, to learn about organic and sustainable agricultural practices and resources, in Spanish.
Our work is dynamic and responsive, it includes remote, administrative tasks, hands-on,“in the dirt” projects, and in-person, community events.
The Organic Education & Production Coordinator will regularly collaborate with program members and farmers, as well as community partners and volunteers to accomplish projects or to offer community events.
For this reason, it is necessary that they are respectful, dependable, adaptable, and an effective communicator.
*SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES* * Support organically grown, culturally relevant crop production for the Organic Garden Program, including pest management, greenhouse propagation, transplanting, sowing, weeding, irrigating, fertilizing, and harvesting.
By growing out starts from our community seed bank, with community input and collaboration, we can ensure that our seed saving and exchanging efforts are able to sustain themselves.
* Create, promote, and facilitate educational and networking opportunities, to build learning-communities focused on organic farming and sustainable agricultural practices: including workshops and community events, offered in Spanish.
These would be offered in collaboration with Gardens staff, Program members, and community partners, and could include hands-on workshops, the Dia del Agricultor Latino conference, and the Siembra la Cena class.
* Work as a liaison to connect farmers to resources available to them through the USDA Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP), including mentorship and other programming.
Offer technical assistance and connection to resources regarding organic practice implementation or transition, in particular for Spanish speaking, Latinx and immigrant farmers.
* Plan and host field days and workshops with information relevant to producers transitioning to organic; work with Oregon State Department of Agriculture to ensure organic certification information is accurate; all TOPP events must be free to all participants.
* Providing direct, 1-1 assistance to agricultural producers on organic production topics such as livestock-crop integration, nutrient and water management, pest management, soil management during organic transition * Assist Garden Program staff in welcoming visitors to our community gardens for tours, workshops and volunteer opportunities.
* Assist Garden Program staff in the maintenance of existing and development of new community gardens.
* Administrative support * Other duties as assigned *REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS* The successful candidate will be community-oriented and adaptable; have a passion for our mission; enjoy working with people from a wide variety of cultures; have a talent for organizing and managing details, and work well independently and as part of a team.
They will be able to work independently to determine and complete tasks once established with the organization.
Candidates must be organized, efficient, and resourceful with good problem-solving skills.
Additionally, the position requires a candidate with the following skills and qualifications: * Ability to speak, write, and understand Spanish and English.
* Must have previous experience in organic gardening, sustainability practices, greenhouse production and/or a willingness to learn * Must be able to perform physically strenuous garden-related tasks including the ability to lift 50 pounds * Must have a car and a valid driver’s license * Basic computer skills * The successful applicant will be required to pass a background check and documentation of eligibility for employment.
